According to a Statistics Canada report, in 2002, foreign owners controlled 14.5% of British Columbia’s corporations. The United States had the “biggest share of the pie” – 5.6%. Should this observation concern unions? Should it concern Canadian Human Relations managers of unionized firms?

I think that it should concern more Canadian human relations managers of unionized firms than unions themselves. But unions should also be concerned. The concern should be related more to the future than to the present. The actual ‘part of the pie’ is still small compared to the remaining 85.5% of Canadian-based ownership of corporations. Nevertheless, the trend is frightening. If three decades ago it was unthinkable that foreign ownership could grasp Canadian companies, now it has become a reality that is expanding at an ever-increasing rate. Unions should be concerned because foreign ownership could shift the focus of the company away from the local communities in BC. Furthermore, they can pressure to outsource labor for financial reasons.

Instead, HR managers should be concerned about the perception that unions and communities have toward foreign ownership. Especially American corporations have a record in outsourcing local employment to foreign, cheaper, labor countries.

This rising perception among the public can damage the actual company’s image and negatively influence the internal relations of the workforce. It can also negatively influence the revenues of the company. Workers may be demoralized and decrease their performance.
