Over fifty percent of the recent sociology majors strongly or somewhat agreed that they employed nine out of ten skills they’ve learned throughout their higher education. The majority of the study participants believed that what they studied about diversity, the influence of social institutions on people, structural inequalities, mechanisms of grouping and in-group thinking, and systemic problems helped them in their careers. The study’s main finding was that respondents who strongly agreed that they employed their sociological abilities on the job were more likely to be extremely pleased with their jobs than those who strongly disagreed.

Similarly, individuals who strongly agreed that they use such talents on the job were more likely to say they work in a career-type position in every scenario. For example, over half of those who strongly agreed that they utilized data analysis skills gained as students to aid them on the job were very pleased with their jobs. Furthermore, more than three-quarters of those who strongly agreed that they used this skill also perceived their current occupations as career-type jobs. However, it is also worth mentioning that respondents noted their lack of understanding and experience with real-life problems and conditions.

Many found their academic experience, although beneficial, to be inefficient in the attempts to reflect the ways in which discrimination and social inequalities manifest in the modern world. These reservations appear to be natural and logically consistent since society evolves every day, whereas the academic syllabus usually takes time to be updated. Therefore, although theoretically correct and still beneficial, they might lose some of their relevancy very quickly and ultimately fail to fully prepare the sociology majors for the real-life experiences of people in need of their support.
