Read “Afterword: Should We Generalize About People?” by Charon. Write out a definition of “stereotype” first by finding Charon’s definition of the term and quoting it here, and then writing in your own words your definition of stereotype based on what you learned from the chapter. Write about what your thoughts on stereotypes were before you read the chapter and tell us a story about an experience you’ve had with a stereotype. Explain how you think about stereotypes now, using at least one quote from the chapter that informs your new or reinforced point of view.

Charon defines stereotypes as categorization that is judgmental, “not created carefully,” and “does not change with new evidence.” It “exaggerates difference rather than promoting understanding” and tends to be “an absolute category” that is oversimplified. After reading the chapter, I can define a stereotype as a fixed, oversimplified idea referring to a particular social category and stemming from the tendency to accept inaccurate generalizations uncritically. Prior to reading the chapter, I regarded stereotypes as overly broad generalizations with insufficient power to create inadequate expectations.

However, a second look at my past experiences reveals this viewpoint’s incorrectness. My friends once introduced me to a Voodoo priest from Haiti. Due to this religion’s questionable representations in Western movies, including human sacrifice, I anticipated meeting a sinister aggressive person. Charon’s discussion, especially an emphasis on stereotypes’ ability to “act as an expectation,” has enabled me to acknowledge stereotypes’ role in establishing at least any anticipated behaviors to compensate for the lack of knowledge.
