Anticoagulants are used therapeutically after a thrombus or blood clot has formed. However, they do not alter the size of the existing thrombus. But rather, they do act to prevent further growth and the possibility of embolization. On the other hand, a thrombolytic will dissolve any existing fresh emboli and thrombi. It is always proper to use an anticoagulant after using a thrombolytic agent. This prevents the reoccurrence of a blood clot.
