The high risk of coronary heart disease is chemically mediated. More specifically, high levels of fat-like cholesterol (Figure 1) increase the likelihood of early development of cardiovascular disease, and coronary disease in particular, as shown. Figure 1 shows that cholesterol (C27H46O) has a cyclic structure with four condensed non-aromatic rings.
