“The Good Person of Sezuan” is a comic mixture of song, dance, and theatre that discloses the universal themes in the first half of the twentieth century. The historical context of the play is framed within the events of the Second World War when the whole of Europe and the United States were affected by Nazi Germany.
The Good Person of Sezuan takes place in the Sezuan province of China so that the play bears the traits of the Chinese theatre. The actions of the drama are mostly reduced to the impoverished part of the city population, regarding the social, cultural, and political background of that time.
However, the play is not about the problems of Chinese people; it is the narration about Shen Teh, who wishes to be a good person, though it brings no satisfaction to her, everyone tries to take advantage of her generosity.
The play also embraces the religious themes where three gods appeared, in the beginning, as the major supporters of her intensions to establish a normal human relationship.
