Supervised learning is about learning from pre-classified training data that consists of some training examples, and then inferring a function. The algorithm is called so because it resembles the learning processes supervised by a teacher. An example of the supervised machine learning algorithm is visual recognition, which is when a robot is trained with video materials of people on the streets to develop algorithms for identifying pedestrians.
