A linearly separable function is one drawn in a two-dimensional graph with the values being either classified into one classification or the other depending on the side of the straight line drawn between them. The problem is that the two types of values must be separable to allow the perceptron network to perform correctly. One classic example of the pattern which is linearly inseparable is an exclusive-OR function, and in such cases, the perceptron cannot succeed.
