Expert system tools use the Rete algorithm for efficiently applying many patterns or rules to objects to decrease the number of comparisons as it allows checking facts only against relevant rules. The algorithm is a search tree each path from the root node to a leaf representing “the left-hand side of a rule,” and nodes store facts already matched by the rules. Since facts are changing, the new ones are propagated through the algorithm from nodes to leaves, and old ones are changed or deleted.
