What factors determine whether people turn out to vote in U.S. elections? Should states continue to allow ballot initiatives and other forms of direct democracy? Why or why not?

One of the most important and determining factors of voter turnout is education since educated individuals are more likely to understand the importance of voter participation and individual power alongside rights. In addition, socioeconomic status and age can also be major factors affecting voter turnout. Lastly, the overall effectiveness of campaigns run by political leaders and candidates, as well as the general public appeal towards them, can heavily influence the turnout rates.

States should allow ballot initiatives and other forms of direct democracy in order to increase the power of the public’s voice in the political arena. The main reason is that such a framework will provide minority or underrepresented communities to have the ability to make proposals, which would normally be absent in a representative’s interest since he or she was selected by a majority.
