HOPS stands for History, Observation, Palpation and Special Tests. It is a method for assessing the patient`s lower leg and ankle. For instance, if he has Achilles tendon stretching, the physician should first understand the mechanisms of injury, identify type, quality and duration of pain, and pay attention to previous treatment modes. At the second stage it is necessary to find out if there are any difficulties with walking, deformities or swellings. Thirdly, the physician should determine if there is any tenderness on palpation or muscle spasms. It is possible to apply Thompson tests for evaluation: to squeeze calf muscle while foot is extended to set the integrity of Achilles tendon.
