People have suffered living in the den since their childhood since they were chained not to move. To be more exact, they were trapped in the consuming darkness, only being able to see the light in front of them, “they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads.” In addition, the prisoners were surrounded by the fire from above and behind.
