Read “A Sound of Thunder,” the short story by Ray Bradbury. How do the characters know what they are allowed to shoot?

Characters knew what they were allowed to shoot because dinosaurs to be killed were marked with red. This made it easy to identify and target the selected animals even from a distance. The identification was made on old dinosaurs because they were near their natural death time, implying that killing them would have little impact on the system. Moreover, they were encouraged to remain in their right position to avoid making mistakes or hurting unintended animals. Hunters were under strict instructions to avoid harming other animals but focused on the achievement of their mission of killing the marked dinosaurs.
