Epithelial dysplasia is a condition that involves negative changes occurring in the cells of the mouth epithelium. The biopsy is the main method for determining the presence of epithelial dysplasia when assessing biopsying erythroplakia (red) lesions and leukoplakia (white) lesions. The former constitutes a lesion on the oral mucosa, which cannot be characterized as any definable disease.

Studies show that when conducting a biopsy on red lesions, they can have an almost 90% rate of epithelial dysplasia. Leukoplakia lesions are white plaques that have a questionable risk and therefore require a biopsy.

Research demonstrates that the malignant transformation rate of oral leukoplakic lesions was between 0.13% and 34%. Patients with biopsy-proven dysplasia must be referred to an oral surgeon or other oral medicine specialists for proper management.
