What is an appropriate differential for a mass of the upper lip, and how does that compare with a differential of a mass on the lower lip?

The differential diagnosis for a mass of the upper lip can include several appropriate conditions which need to be studied closely by professionals.

The masses occurring on both lips can be divided into three main groups salivary gland tumors, mesenchymal tumors, and infections. The upper lip diagnoses may include pulpo‑periapical pathology, which is an acute periapical abscess, and nodular fibrous hyperplasia, which is a common soft tissue lesion.

There also can be squamous cell papilloma, a benign growth that can occur on both lips. As for the lower lip, the appropriate differential diagnosis for mass on it would include squamous cell carcinoma, which more often occurs on the vermilion border of the lower lip.

Another common diagnosis in the case of a lower lip mass is mucocele which looks like a vesicular or bullous lesion. Thus, the upper and lower lip masses can entail different diagnoses for patients.
