Oftentimes, slavery is described as something bad that the South did. However, as we see, the U.S. North benefited substantially from the slave trade. How did the North benefit from slavery?

Today, some people still attempt to diminish the scale of slavery, pretending as if it was local and sporadic. They claim that slavery was left in the past as a crime committed by only a few Southerners. However, what the revisionists seem to dismiss is that the US-North also reaped benefits from the chattel slavery system that only came to a halt in the 19th century. In times of colonial America, the North, and the South did not exist as independent territories.

In fact, their culture, economy, and politics were tightly interwoven. The South consistently supplied The North with raw materials such as cotton, which boosted its textile industry and made it globally competitive. The domestic slave trade was fairly profitable and became a factor in attracting investments to the New World. As a result, the North enjoyed new financial institutions and products such as securities, bonds, and mortgages.
