Many times people say that not everyone owned slaves and, therefore, their families have no responsibility to combat the racism which came out of slavery. In what ways do these articles contradict this perspective?

Even though chattel slavery was primarily concentrated in the South, both the North and the South benefitted from it. The U.S. economic growth was driven by slavery, among other important factors. Aside from that, slavery led to institutionalized racism that deprived black people of many privileges and put them in a vulnerable position socially and economically. Therefore, even though only a limited number of Southern farmers own slaves, all white Americans living today are the beneficiaries of the racially unjust system.
