When the 1848 gold rush started in California, there was an acute shortage of cheap labor. The majority of the whites from the south traveled with their slaves to the gold mines. Secondly, most African – American people, free and enslaved, wanted to obtain gold so that they could buy their freedom together with their families. Indigenous societies had been pushed by the gold rushers from their farmlands, thus subjecting them to hardships, which forced them into chattel slavery.
