I would start with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test that singles out sixteen personalities based on the pairs of traits: extraversion vs. introversion, feeling vs. thinking, sensing vs. intuition, and perceiving vs. judging. While the test is not devoid of bias, it could be useful in launching a self-exploration process in the client. The questions in the full version are challenging and stimulating and might help Joe think about sides of his personality that have not received much attention. The second assessment tool would be Career Cluster Interest Survey which takes into consideration not only personality traits but also enjoyable activities and preferred school subjects. In the test, it is never asked directly about the desired future profession; instead, the mechanism tries to match the existing interests with an appropriate career field.
