Bassi was able to prove that a fungus caused a silkworm disease but later Koch found out that a protozoan led to another silkworm infection. Koch’s postulates are more credible because he fulfilled the criteria proposed by his former teacher, which are: that the disease-causing microbe should occur in all the sick animals and that no healthy individual should be infested with the microbe. Secondly, the microbe should be possible to isolate from the sick animal and be grown as a pure culture.

Thirdly, the pure culture should be able to produce a certain disease syndrome when inoculated in a healthy susceptible individual. Lastly, the microbe must be isolated from the test animal and should possess similar characteristics as the original microorganism. Bassi’s postulates are important as they form the basis for further research but they are incredible because he never fulfilled the right criteria for his work and therefore cannot be used conclusively.
