Imagine that you are a farmer that grows corn as a main crop and source of most of your income. Assume that you have control over three potential uses for your corn crop which include: 1. Ethanol production. 2. Livestock feed. 3. Corn syrup. Which of the above uses would you choose for your corn? Provide at least 3 reasons to justify your choice. Provide at least one reason for not choosing either of the other alternatives. If given the choice, would you use groundwater or treated wastewater for irrigation and provide support for your choice.

Within the provided selection, my optimal choice would be to use corn to produce corn syrup.

First of all, this product is in high demand today, making it economically feasible to produce. Second, the environmental footprint of corn syrup production is not as considerable as is the case with other products.

In fact, among other varieties of natural sugars, it requires much less soil. Therefore, corn syrup accounts for a share of the market in demand, and its deficit of it would cause further deforestation in an attempt to replace it with cane sugar. Finally, this is a natural sweetener with a neutral reputation capable of bringing joy to American households by improving the taste of other products.

Livestock feeding could be another viable option, but this would mean contributing to one of the most environmentally unfriendly industries. As far as ethanol production is concerned, it is associated with alcohol manufacturing and consumption. There are enough of such products in the market, and supporting them hardly aligns with public health.

When growing the crops, I would seek to mediate the environmental impact of my endeavor to the maximum degree possible. This is why I would opt for non-synthetic pesticides, even though the crop yield is likely to be lower.

Corn syrup is often marketed as a healthier and more sustainable alternative to most sweeteners, which does not correlate with the use of synthetic pesticides. Combined with a high demand for the product, it is feasible to make the enterprise beneficial with a lower yield.

In terms of irrigation, I would still choose groundwater as a safer option. Ofori et al. objectively describe the benefits and disadvantages of treated wastewater use for these purposes, which dictates the choice for this particular scenario. While treated water contributes to resource conservation, it bears health-related risks that should be negated when producing corn syrup to be consumed by people, including children.
