How might resistance arise during a change program, and how might it be helpful?

Individual resistance through open criticism of the proposed system or reduced productivity by employees is a potential method of enacting resistance. This method is popular in workplaces with minimal cohesion amongst employees and workplaces composed of bold employees.

These employees may feel an inherent need to oppose the system whenever they feel it infringes on some of their rights, and the personal resistance may encompass sporadic ineffectiveness. Employees may also unite in their actions to resist change and engage in civic events such as strikes. This is the most popular method of resisting change in professions with unions.

These include professions whose main employers are governments which are prone to making rapid changes to workplace operations. The strikes are usually aimed at coercing the employers to engage the employees in the change process to ensure their views are captured.

Passive resistance through methods such as delay tactics due to the fear they might lose their jobs is an additional method of opposition. Employees may result to this tactic to protest the changes intended for enactment at the workplace. This tactic is also employed by workers in strategic sectors where a total strike may become detrimental to the operation of the entire sector.

They cause deliberate delays to ensure that total paralysis is evaded while their opinions are subsequently expressed and considered. The use of representatives for professions that rely on unions is a peaceful method of expressing resistance and ensuring the inclusion of employee views on the change process.

The union leaders communicate the needs of the employees to the employers and the change managers and express their discomfort at the alteration. The unions additionally present the preferences of the employees, making their position on the proposed changes clear.
