Elon Musk claims that his plan was to develop a luxury car that could help the company accumulate the necessary funds for the development of an affordable model. However, it is likely that this was a strategic vision rather than a plan. Musk’s statement represents an ex-post rationalization. First, Musk did not mention this when the company was founded. He did not articulate such plans until the mid-2010s. Furthermore, the company did not invest sufficient resources in the production of an affordable electric vehicle. Tesla could have developed an electric car that would have fewer high-end features but lower prices. The company did not do this. The development of technology enables the company to reduce costs, which leads to the development of less expensive models, but it has little to do with the announced commitment to the creation of affordable electric cars.
