In 1952, Jonas Salk, an American medical researcher and virologist invented the first polio vaccine. Jonas Salk became America’s most beloved scientist, and her discovery was called a miracle. After World War II, poliomyelitis became a serious public health problem. The vaccine worked successfully, and it became possible to avoid human casualties. Since Salk’s invention, public outbreaks of polio have become much rarer.
