In 1998, James Alexander Thomson, an American developmental biologist, obtained the first line of human embryonic stem cells. Later, he found a way to create stem cells from human skin cells. Stem cells are used in many medical fields: their transplantation can help patients who have suffered a heart attack. Stem cell research has given a significant boost to 21st-century medicine.
