Discuss and post your notes on the readings “A Bullet in the Brain” by Tobias Wolff, and “Incarnations of Burned Children” by David Foster Wallace.

Both stories are focused on depicting sudden dramatic events that happened in different people’s lives. In A Bullet in the Brain, the meaning of the story was to emphasize how people resort to cynicism on a daily basis. The story illustrates how, for some people, cynicism becomes the foundation of their perception of the world to the point of dulling their sense of self-preservation. The main character struggles to understand the real danger of the situation that he got into and proceeds to carry his cynical daily attitude into the dangerous setting. On the other hand, Incarnations of Burned Children illustrates how the parent’s daily activities could result in dramatic outcomes for their child’s life. Both stories are meant to remind the readers that people only have one chance to live, and they should value their lives and the lives of other people instead of focusing on the burdens of daily life.
