The chances of successfully completing a drug-related investigation without the help of an informant are very low. Consequently, various categories of confidential informants are crucial in making observations and collecting intelligence. First, a problem informant is one whose personalities act as a hindrance to the collaboration. Second, egotistical informants highly rely on positive feedback as the primary reward for their contributions. Third, “James Bond Syndrome” informants picture themselves as spies or police officers during their assignments. The fourth group is the wannabe informant who has an aspiration of becoming a law enforcer. Fifth, perversely motivated informants are those with hidden agendas to secretly benefit themselves. The final class is restricted use informants, and these are individuals who are capable of causing management issues to the involved handlers and supervisors. As a detective, I would prefer working with wannabe informants because altruism is their main motivating factor. All they are concerned about is making a difference by being involved in investigations.
