Social initiatives such as sustainability and philanthropy became important elements of brand management for many companies, not only those in the sportswear industry. In part, this is a response to the increasing awareness of society regarding the specifics of manufacturing and the impact that companies have on the environment. One can argue that this path was chosen by Nike because of its history of using unfair work conditions practices. For example, in 1990, the company was accused of applying poor labor practices and providing employees with improper work conditions. Hence, Nike developed a strategy for decreasing its carbon dioxide emissions and apply practices that allow their manufacturing facilities to use natural resources more efficiently. In addition, they incorporated a software application into their processes, which helped designers work on new products that are high quality and friendly for the environment. Hence, Nike’s choice to dedicate more effort towards sustainability and philanthropy is a good marketing strategy for its Nike Football brand because it addresses some of the major concerns that consumers have and improves the operations of the organizations, making the latter more efficient.
