The 2010 World Football Cup was remarkable for Nike because the company made major changes to its target demographic, advertising strategy, and core values. Firstly, instead of targeting young people aged twelve to fourteen years old, Nike focuses on teenagers who were seventeen years old and older. This shift was important because seventeen years old people are more independent, compared to the previous target demographic of Nike, meaning that they can make independent decisions regarding brand loyalty and buy products they like themselves. Moreover, Nike believed that these people were more driven when choosing and pursuing their football goals, meaning that the company could build a good relationship with this customer base. Next, inspiration and perspiration became the major values for Nike as part of their 2010 World Football Cup campaign. Nike Football Training Initiative was established, which allowed them to achieve two main targets – create a brand-based community of teenagers and gain more insight into their customer’s preferences. Hence, the marketing shift that Nike had in 2010 was important for its brand. It targeted an audience more suitable for the brand and helped them develop a more cohesive approach to building a relationship with their customers.
