By 1931, whale conservation became an international topic. How did the museum change or not to accommodate changing views? In what ways did members debate how to officially display ‘the hunt’?

To accommodate changing views in 1932, when whale conservation became an international topic, the museum changed appropriately. First, the ODHS declared that it was not a conservation group but a historical site This move enabled society to evade legislation that sought to establish an outright ban on some whaling practices. The legislation, though, failed, but ODHS was not affected. Consequently, in 1935, over 3,000 people participated in the unveiling of the Wood Building.

However, different members were not pleased by how the ‘hunt’ was being displayed and gave differing opinions on the best way to represent it. Some claimed that the museum concentrated too much on whaling artifacts. According to this group, the museum had been literary changed into an exhibition other than a historical site. Several groups had the opinion that the best way to display the hunt was through Hollywood because times were quickly changing. Finally, society made significant steps in increasing the size of the audience. They offered free viewing of artifacts on Sundays and educated visitors on issues concerning the past.
