With the passing of the whaling industry in New England, experts advocated something profound, culturally was lost: an old type of manhood. For the seafaring man: what were these characteristics to model and to be respected for these age old values? Explain and discuss Lindgren’s history and evidence of whaling 18-19 century from ports of call and how New Bedford citizens struggled with changing economic circumstances in a growing industrial economy. Include also the growing collection of artifacts in the 19C by Henry Worth and through donation & later the ODHS (Old Dartmouth Historical Society).

With the entry of the whaling industry in New England, an old type of manhood was lost. In the 1700s, colonists began to develop their own whale fishery, but this did not involve long-distance voyages. In the early 1800s, whale populations around the shore of New England began to wane, prompting whalers in this part to begin sailing whaling ships away from the shores into deep waters up north. With intense whaling, the industry further collapsed due to the lack of whales. This marked the end of a robust business entity and the start of a failed manhood. Americans in the whaling industry were brave, innovative, able, spry in their work, and aggressive. All these attributes died together with the collapsed whaling industry.

In the 1930s, whalers from New Bedford were spread across the world. However, in the early 1730s, the British overpowered the Dutch, and the whaling industry thrived well around this time. New Bedford was not left out, and it claimed its share in the whaling industry, and by the 1820s, whaling in New Bedford surpassed any other region in the United States. With increasing activities in this town, it was branded a city where rich captains established posh neighborhoods. This marked rapid changes in the economy, ushering in industrialization. Two tragedies hit New Bedford, which saw them lose 28 local vessels and 22 others crumbled under Arctic ice. These tragedies, coupled with diminishing sources of whales to hunt, forced locals here to change from whaling to the textile industry. They also came up with rapeseed which replaced whale oil. Many capitalists moved their fleets to Pacific harbors in the wake of the whaling industry decline.

As part of their strategy to cope with the changes in the economy, locals here secured employment in mills. Crapo, a leader in New Bedford during those times, noted that the rich history of this place was not archived in any way which would remind people of their past. He called for action, and people assembled relics, which would be preserved in a better way. Henry Worth’s contribution stood out as he wooed people to bring in varied artifacts for preservation. People then donated these relics to authority for archiving. Later, a committee formed the Old Dartmouth Historical Society (ODHS). This society relied entirely on donations from well-wishers but flourished under the leadership of Crapo.
