The Red River Colony, also known as the Selkirk settlement, was a project of colonization that was established by Thomas Douglas and Earl of Selkirk in the year 1811. The setup was not successful because it changed as a result of Canada’s development in 1800, whereby the colony formed the basis of today’s Manitoba. Selkirk provided better life in the colony purposely to gain firm control of the area. He established trading mechanisms in the colony. The colony had water shades bounded by the rainy rivers and lakes of the woods. When they started farming in the colony, the results were very inhuman because Selkirk banned the transfer of foodstuff from the colony to other parts outside. There is no clear indication if this was a means of ensuring food security for the colony. Also, it was not clear if the business moves intention was to cut off the Nor Western.
Depending on which reason they had, this move facilitated the war of Pemmican. Nor Wasters, whose main reliance was Pemmican supplied to them by the locally found Métis, destroyed the Fort Douglas and also burned all the structures around it down. When Selkirk learned about the problematic situation, he sent out a new governor to take cover. After the rebuild of Fort Douglas, the battle for seven Oaks broke out, and it was burned again, and the settlers were forced out of the territory. Selkirk later sent about 100 soldiers to enforcement from the British, who later, after settling the dispute, became the settlers and captured the North West parts of the colony. During this time, peace was maintained. The colony was not particularly successful in terms of agriculture, although the notion of free land added settlers yearly. Consequently, Hudson’s Bay Company lost interest in making payment for the settlement. This led to the second unrest in 1969 to 1970, which was referred to as the Red River Rebellion which contributed to the establishment of Manitoba. In 1869, the land which was owned by Hudson’s Bay Company had changed again and made the property of new dominion of Canadians.
From the above description, the colonies lived in the Red River colony in 1869. They made their living through farming since the land had plenty of water from various rivers and also through the hunting of buffalo for food when the growing season was over. Their future concerns were to set themselves free from the colonies and be left in their settlements, although annually, more settlers were invading the land. This best course of action to address their concerns is due to series of intimidations that were experienced by the colonies from the settlers. Continuous wars break out which was damaging their properties was their other concern. Another cause was due to the problem of linking several kinds of entries in the land register to demographic material on households.
