Hunsford Estate is an imaginary place from Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. Its location is at the Hunsford Parsonage near Rosings Park, Kent. William Collins and his wife Elizabeth are the current dwellers. They moved there after William accepted the clergyman position in the parish. The estate belongs to Mr.Collins’s patroness, Lady Catherine De Bourgh. She herself lives at Rosings Park.
When Elizabeth arrives at Hunsford, she sees the house. Its “garden is sloping to the road, the house standing in it, the green pales and the laurel hedge, everything declared that they were arriving.” The house is described as small but well-built and convenient. Upon arrival, Elizabeth notes the neatness of the entrance and structure. A good proportion of rooms and furniture also attract her attention. To her, everything seems neat and comfortable there.
The garden is large and well laid out. Mr. Collins took care of it himself: “To work in his garden was one of his most respectable pleasures.” When Elizabeth gets a chance to explore the house, she observes that “everything was fitted up and arranged with a neatness and consistency of which Elizabeth gave Charlotte all the credit.” Elizabeth notes that “when Mr. Collins could be forgotten, there was really an air of great comfort throughout.”
