The authors’ hypothesis was that sexual reproduction between fungi strains with different virulence leads to the variability of this characteristic in the wild population. Slinski et al. demonstrated the fungi’s ability just to reduce the virulence under the selection. It could mean that the selection for virulence to pine does not exist in nature in the present time. However, the authors stated that this trait could be evolutionary new and will develop in the future.
