The authors crossed two wild strains of F. circinatum and obtained F1 generation. After that, they inoculated pine’s branches and collected only strains with the high virulence for getting F2 and F3 generation. Simultaneously, they collected the strains with low virulence. The authors chose the fungi according to the size of the plant lesion they caused. Their prediction: the virulence of fungi is controlled genetically. It means that it could increase or decrease under the selection.

During the experiments, the authors obtained the data of actual significant decreases of the virulence level. Only three generations were required to demonstrate the tendency. Significant virulence increase was not shown. The variance of each next generation became smaller. It means that the population became more stable. Obtained data supported the author’s hypothesis. The high heritability of virulence is shown. During the experiments, the authors obtained a wide range of virulence levels among the progeny. Selection to virulence decreasing influenced the trait distribution. At the same time, selection to virulence increasing affected neither the mean of this character nor the distribution.
