In his article “Glutton Intolerance,” Engber argues that overweight people often face discrimination in society, and educating fat people about their excess weight might be quite counterproductive and have serious consequences. First of all, obesity might lead to the persistence of prejudices in the working environment because it can cause lower-income and wage penalties. Important to mention, women usually suffer from discrimination in the workforce due to excess weight more often than men. Second, overweight sometimes affects the way women tend to build romantic relationships. The author states that it might be more difficult for large women to find a life partner, and, as a result, their chances to get married decrease. Last but not least, people who suffer from excess weight face discrimination in the medical sphere as well. Doctors tend to assign them negative traits, make cynical comments, and they can even refuse to help this kind of patient. Thus, professionals might not always provide a full range of necessary services for them. In addition, obesity might increase the risk of developing depression and other mental illnesses, such as traumatic stress, eating disorders, or panic disorder. In certain severe cases, it might lead to diabetes or even eventually have lethal consequences. Engber mentions that the diseases associated with the obesity problem tend to sometimes make the nation less wealthy in a certain way. Individuals with excessive weight have to pay bills for curing other important illnesses. Losing weight might help some people to save more money.
