What is anaphylaxis? Outline the pathophysiology of anaphylaxis and list five common agents that may trigger anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a form of severe allergic reaction with rapid onset, and it can cause death if not addressed in time. In most cases, this condition occurs due to an inflammatory response characterized by the release of chemical agents like cytokines from mast cells and basophils in response to the immunologic reaction. Normally, when a foreign agent enters the body system, the immune system is activated to respond as a way of defense mechanism. However, non-immunologic reactions may trigger anaphylaxis. In the immunologic reaction, immunoglobulin E (IgE) binds to the foreign material, which is normally referred to as antigen. The binding of IgE to the antigen activates receptors on basophils and mast cells, thus leading to the release of inflammatory mediators. The mediators so released trigger the increased contraction of smooth muscles of the bronchi coupled with other events like the depression of heart muscles, and vasodilation among others. On the other side, a non-immunologic reaction occurs due to the degranulation of mast cells occasioned by different substances like opioids and sulfites or vibration. The common agents that may trigger anaphylaxis include aspirin, penicillin, ibuprofen, latex, and food substances like peanuts.
