Adrenaline binds to the beta-adrenergic receptors, which triggers a series of metabolic reactions to lessen vasodilation and vascular permeability experienced during anaphylaxis. The effect is hypotension coupled with the loss of intravascular fluid volume. The contraction of smooth muscles of the bronchi during anaphylaxis is reversed, and this relaxation alleviates bronchospasm and wheezing. Ultimately, all the symptoms associated with escalation of anaphylaxis are reversed, and the patient can breathe normally. Intramuscular injection is preferred because adrenaline administered as such has a rapid onset of action as absorption is immediate, and within four minutes, the patient is relieved of anaphylaxis. Given the rapid acceleration nature of anaphylaxis, the method of administration should have immediate onset effects, and thus intramuscular injection is the preferred option in this case.
