Tissue expansion is a surgical procedure that allows to naturally stretch and grow skin and is frequently used in breast reconstruction or to repair other areas with thin skin (e.g., scalp, face, hands). The process is relatively simple: the physician inserts a silicone balloon expander in the damaged area and fills it with saline or carbon dioxide.

While the operation is relatively safe and effective, it takes a significant amount of time and requires constant consultation with the surgeon. While the initial procedure only takes up to several hours, the patient needs to continually return to the physician’s office to enlarge the expander, which prolongs the overall operation time up to several months.
