Although the United States healthcare system has many shortcomings, the system has one main advantage over the other systems. The United States has a free market that is not stifled by government regulations. Therefore, health care practitioners are in a position to make profits which has helped researchers advance knowledge in the medical field and fund innovations. This is in sharp contrast to health care systems in Taiwan and Japan, where even though Medicare is affordable, hospitals are constantly struggling to maintain an operational balance and, in extreme instances, are operating at a deficit. According to Wang and Haolun, over-regulating the healthcare system in Taiwan and Japan has resulted in affordable healthcare in financially struggling hospitals.
