One of the typical motor disorders is Parkinson’s disease. This disease has symptoms such as slow movements and postural instability. This progressive neurological disorder often occurs when some parts of the brain responsible for motor control are damaged. Both the central and peripheral control systems are involved in the occurrence of Parkinson’s disease.

The central nervous system is made of by spinal cord together with the brain. On the other hand, the peripheral system includes the nerves found around the nose alongside guts distributed to the brain. The two nervous systems are said to be involved in peripheral disease. The condition starts from nerves’ failure before spreading to the brain and the spinal cord, thus affecting movement.

Parkinson’s disease occurs when the neurons that connect substantia nigra to the striatum die, thus cutting off the source of dopamine, resulting in difficulty in movement. The disease affects two significant pathways, the lateral and medial pathways, facilitating motor control from the brain to the muscles. The areas affected by Parkinson’s disease are subcortical as they are deeper sections of the brain.

People living with Parkinson’s disease also suffer from less severe memory loss cases and experience slow movement. Parkison’s disease mainly affects the nerve cells in the deeper sections of the brain, thus interfering with relaying information to the brain that facilitates movement. Motor diseases such as Parkinson’s prove that various brain areas are highly involved in the motor control process.
