In “Long Day’s Journey,” each of the characters is equally miserable due to their co-dependent relationships and the need to obtain gratification from one another’s suffering. While the victimization of each Tyrone family member is evident, they also take turns to be quite aggressive toward each other, thus, perpetuating family violence and unhealthy relationships. Specifically, the relationships that the mother, Mary, has established with the rest of the family are quite toxic due to her drug dependency: “The past is the present, isn’t it? It’s the future, too.” Thus, Mary accepts the role of a victim and contributes to the abuse by encouraging harmful behaviors.
