The quote is retrieved from “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston. The cold river refers to the snake poison that is slowly killing Della’s husband. Interestingly, it is the husband that had brought in the snake to kill his wife, Della. The eye refers to that of her husband, who knew that she would let him die as she already knew he had planned to kill her. The details of the story shed light on the meaning of the theme of domestic violence. Della and her husband did not have a happy marriage, and due to societal pressures, the husband felt the need to kill his wife in order to remarry.
