Riffles were not allowed in the preserve, but Gan used one that his family had been hiding to kill the largest archti. Upon completing the task, he returned and witnessed Lomas’ abdomen being cut open to harvest the eggs, which were later placed on the animal’s carcass to feed. He also witnessed his tilak sucking on Lomas’ blood, and the pain and the scenes before him made him lose a bit of trust in the man he had grown to trust. He excused himself to go out and vomit since he couldn’t bear what he had seen. Before this incident, he did not understand the weight of the role assigned to him. Gan’s older brother, Qui, a rebel against the system, explained to Gan that he had once experienced a Tlic killing a human. He also declared that humans were just like animals and Property to the Tlic.

Throughout Gan’s life, he was taught that the Tlics and the Terrans living together was a good and important thing for both of their survival. He had been taught everything that surrounded the life of being an egg carrier, but the scenes before him weren’t what he had imagined. A discussion with his older brother, Qui, made him understand why his brother was not a supporter of the idea that Terrans should be used as incubators for the Tlics’ eggs. The incident made Gan question whether he was ready to act as a carrier for his Tlic, T’Gatoi, regarding what he had just experienced.

The thought of him being in Lomas’ shoes made him fear the role assigned to him. Gan felt that the Tlics were there to use them, and they did not care about their choices and what they had undergone during the delivery of the grubs. Gun had the thought that killing himself using the family’s rifle was a way to run away from undertaking his assigned duty. During a discussion between Gan and his Tlic T’Gatoi, he informed his tilak of how he felt. He was not ready to be the egg carrier, not because he hated his role but because he was afraid after witnessing the grubs’ emergency delivery. Gan declared that the task was to be passed down to his younger sister, who was eager to carry out such a role of being a carrier to the Daleks eggs.
