I believe the authors are concerned with this issue because despite the “lip service…given to multicultural concerns”, there is no “commitment to translating them into ethical standards” or make them “a part of the accreditation criteria.” I believe the article’s warnings and recommendations are warranted because there have been numerous studies about systematic discrimination as a result of unconscious biases. In fields like counseling, when one person is actively responsible for the psychological state of another, multicultural competence is paramount to ensure the clients’ safety and well-being.
