What is the idea of the Social Contract? How can it be seen as relating to a Prisoner’s Dilemma pertaining to morality?

According to Hobbes, the social contract is a situation where individuals agree to have rules that govern their actions to ensure morality within the society. The concept allows people to interact and corporate accordingly by having guiding principles that individuals adhere to. To stick to the rules, the community must have a way of enforcing the laws either through the government so that people cannot break them intentionally. Furthermore, through social contract, moral values like care are instilled in people, therefore, making the community a better place.

In relation to the prisoner’s dilemma, a social contract comes when people are forced to act in one direction that would preserve their interests. Based on the scenario, if individuals are allowed to pursue their interests without considering their colleagues, they will end up benefiting while other people remain suffering. Therefore, to enhance morality in people’s actions, individuals should corporate to maximize the outcome of their activities. By taking care of other peoples’ interests, society can be able to protect the needs of everyone. Moral values make people respect others and therefore eliminate other forms of vices that would corrupt the system.
