Notably, I partially agree with Imani Perry regarding the issue. Imani Perry states that “hip-hop is masculine music” because it highlights a distinct black male identity. She considers that hip-hop masculinity displays “the desire to assert black male subjectivity.” Consequently, it is often illustrated by subjugating women’s bodies or showing the difficulty of the black male identity.

Onanuga acknowledges that since the late 1980s, “hip-hop has been continually battered by accusations” because of violence, misogyny, promiscuity, and substance use display. In addition, hip-hop is called masculine because artists in their lyrics and videos praise weapons, violent and abusive behaviors, alcohol and drugs, and demonstrate women as subjects.

Moreover, 50 Cent and Big Daddy Kane, among others, contributed significantly to the genre’s masculinity (Philips). Masculinity is presented via misogyny and violence in many songs, for instance, 50 Cent’s ‘In Da Club’ and ‘Candy shop’ (Philips). Nevertheless, I mentioned that I partially agree because there are plenty of female hip-hop artists. For instance, nowadays, Nicki Minaj, Missi Elliott, Rihanna, Lil’ Kim, and Cardi B are well-known and admired globally.
