Belisa lives in a very poor society where hunger, deaths, and exhaustion due to long droughts are common issues. She buried her four brothers and sisters and set off eastwards after she suspected that it was her turn to die next. The residents were also hostile and impassionate; Belisa had no time to waste for an act of compassion. Furthermore, the society is gullible since, in her quest to make a living, Belisa easily manipulates the residents to give her audience, and they end up revealing each other’s misdeeds to her as they seek to get a word that will drive away melancholy. More so, they are desperate to the extent that they pay Belisa to drive away their melancholy.
