In her lecture on obesity in the US, Professor Yuhas highlighted four levels/scales of obesity determinants. If you were brainstorming on strategies for addressing the rising cases of obesity, which two levels/scales would you focus on and why?

Among the four levels or scales of obesity determinants, I would primarily focus on the community and individual determinants of overweight. The reason for concentrating on individual-oriented obesity prevention measures is associated with the nature of management from a people’s behavioral standpoint.

While both diagnosis and treatment of obesity are based on the same thermodynamic theory, the problems are somewhat different. The intervention entails establishing a negative energy equilibrium through significant calorie restriction and increased physical activity to achieve a noticeable drop in weight gain. The goal of prevention is to achieve nutritional neutrality and avoid a chronic, minor positive energy deficit that culminates in being overweight.

As a result, measuring the benefits of prevention is challenging, as the benefits are less obvious. Furthermore, it is difficult to determine or convince people that they are making little changes in their regular exercise that may help them avoid being excessively overweight. On the other hand, to successfully reach the neighborhood, strategies should be used in various institutional environments.

These locations correlate to initiatives, partnerships, synchronization, and collaborative tactics. Care centers for children, institutions for adolescents and young adults, workplaces, and senior centers for older persons are all illustrations of contemporary contexts.

Organizational initiatives or procedures may include regulatory, mandated, or consensual modifications that influence an institution. Social programs may consist of ordering eateries to disclose the nutritional information of their food items, improving the effectiveness of vegetables in a workplace cafeteria, and restricting the accessibility of sweetened tastes.

Physical activities and playground standards in institutions, childcare facilities, and follow-up arrangements may be implemented at the community level. Schools may create development programs to equip instructors to teach diet and provide monetary assistance for weight-control supports and initiatives.
