Employers are more concerned about their employees’ ability to perform. However, it is difficult to motivate workers because most managers do not know their staff’s ‘directions.’ There are two components of motivation which include direction and intensity. The direction component defines personal goals that employees want to achieve on individual levels. At the same time, intensity is the energy required to fulfill the goals. For that matter, the employees’ directions may not coincide with the managers’ objectives.
Black et al. also claim that employers should try and understand their employees and assign them roles that are fulfilling. Furthermore, the concept of need theory explains five types of needs that guarantee human satisfaction based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. They include physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, and self-realization needs. Employers are, therefore, challenged since it takes more effort and investments to meet all the needs.
